Canada is currently the only major industrialized country in the world that does not allow any private administration of health care services that are provided by the public system.

I don't think it should be a surprise when we're talking about energy and trying to have more home-grown energy be less reliant on foreign oil when you look at our health care that we're trying to get more affordable health care that these are going to create major debates in this country and be somewhat polarizing.

Science is the international language so when we are able to convince countries that good decision-making for human health and animal health is based upon science that's a real success story for us.

People are ready to say 'Yes we are ready for single-payer health insurance.' We are the only industrialized country in the world that does not have national health insurance. We are the richest in wealth and the poorest in health of all the industrial nations.

If any country was a mine-shaft canary for the reintroduction of cholera it was Haiti - and we knew it. And in retrospect more should have been done to prepare for cholera... which can spread like wildfire in Haiti... This was a big rebuke to all of us working in public health and health care in Haiti.

It's wonderful that so many people want to contribute to fighting aids or malaria. But if somebody isn't paying attention to the overall health system in the country a whole lot of money can be wasted.

We've taken on the major health problems of the poorest - tuberculosis maternal mortality AIDS malaria - in four countries. We've scored some victories in the sense that we've cured or treated thousands and changed the discourse about what is possible.

I think the British people are very very attached to the idea that the health service is free at the point of use. But there is no reason why every doctor nurse and teacher in this country has to be employed by the state.

For the amount of money that the country is going to spend this year on health care you can go out and hire a doctor for every seven families in the US and pay the doctor almost $230 000 a year to cover them.
