Football basketball and the Olympic sports all have their problems with banned substances.

I do feel like I have always in my life been inclined to be on the outside walk a different path or something. Because of that and increasingly over the years my sense of distance from mainstream society or from the way culture works I have a different kind of perception of it.

All of us in society are supposed to believe that cruelty to animals is wrong and that it is a good thing to prevent needless suffering. So if that is true how can meat be acceptable under any but the most extraordinary circumstances such as perhaps roasting the bird who died flying into a window?

We sometimes laugh from ear to ear but it would be impossible for a smile to be wider than the distance between our eyes.

No doubt it is true that science cannot study God but it hardly follows that God had to keep a safe distance from everything that scientists want to study.

Nevertheless as is a frequent occurrence in science a general hypothesis was constructed from a few specific instances of a phenomenon.

Without renouncing the support of physics it is possible for the physiology of the senses not only to pursue its own course of development but also to afford to physical science itself powerful assistance.

It's easier to write from my own life and it's also more fun. I always write about relationships for instance whether they're romantic relationships friendships encounters... there's always a lesson to be learned from them.

There are some people who become best friends with everyone they photograph. There are people that I really like and admire and respect but in a way I think it's better to keep a distance. I think you get better pictures of people that you don't know very well.

My goal is to get another 30 years out of this business. So I need to figure out the fuel to do that. And so far I think it's respect and quality and company not celebrity or box office or stardom. It's not a sprinter's approach. It's more like a long-distance thing. You can stick around a lot longer if you kind of slow-play it.

I respect people who feel things passionately. I do. But when someone is a judge that is not what they should bring to the bench. It is not really passion except in rare instances that serves the bench well. It is rather an ability to understand the law and follow it.

Psychology is as important as substance. If you treat people with respect they will go out of their way to accommodate you. If you treat them in a patronizing way they will go out of their way to make your life difficult.

I met Jesse Owens once. He was a remarkable individual and I have tremendous respect for what he did in the Olympics under the circumstances.
