Everyone comes up to me saying 'Cooee Julie! Hello!' as if I know them. Of course I don't bloody know them. Am I flummoxed by it? Sometimes. I think 'Ooh love go easy.' For a time I did feel this pressure that I had to be funny but it passes.

I think I have an inner confidence that my tastes are pretty simple that what I find funny finds a wide audience. I'm not particularly intellectual or clever or minority-focused in my creative instincts. And I'm certainly not aware of suppressing more sophisticated ambitions.

I think we're all good and bad but good's not funny. Bad is funny. Suppress the good and let the bad out and then you can be funny.

Recession is when a neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours.

But as I was saying from my experiences I think men tend to be more timid in expressing their feelings for you. Regardless I always prefer a friendship first and foremost.

Without freedom of the press there can be no representative government.

My name became known because I was one might say accidentally the target of state repression and because so many people throughout the country and other parts of the world organized around the demand for my freedom.

Freedom of expression comes with responsibilities especially when it comes with serious implications for peace.

I don't think that there is absolute freedom of the press. We operate under laws - against libel for instance. The idea that there is some absolute press freedom is kind of a myth.

Many have left their families to defend our freedom. We salute their bravery we express our appreciation and support to their families. And we pray for their safe return.

When we through our educational culture through the media through the entertainment culture give our children the impression that human beings cannot control their passions we are telling them in effect that human beings cannot be trusted with freedom.

One of the unsung freedoms that go with a free press is the freedom not to read it.

I mean there's enormous pressures to harmonize freedom of speech legislation and transparency legislation around the world - within the E.U. between China and the United States. Which way is it going to go? It's hard to see.

Widespread state control over art and culture has left no room for freedom of expression in the country. For more than 60 years anyone with a dissenting opinion has been suppressed. Chinese art is merely a product: it avoids any meaningful engagement. There is no larger context. Its only purpose is to charm viewers with its ambiguity.

At 6 years old the ice became a place for me to express myself. Because I was so shy off the ice it became my safe haven with music and freedom and self-expression. That was my emotional outlet.

In America it's live by the sword of freedom of expression and be will to die by it as well.
