I really wouldn't want to live in America. I found New York claustrophobic and dirty. I missed England when I was there simple things like smells and the British sense of humor.

He has such a patronizing tone and manner and such a sarcastic sense of humor. I found him rather brutal a kind of elegant brutality which appealed. No I think he came pretty much off the page.

My books are shelved in different places depending on the bookstore. Sometimes they can be found in the Mystery section sometimes in the Humor department and occasionally even in the Literature aisle which is somewhat astounding.

We need to recognise that the whole edifice of our fifth estate of our journalism has been built on a foundation of newspaper journalism and that that foundation is crumbling. The management of the media companies will deny that the end is nigh. I hope they are right.

Whether you've seen angels floating around your bedroom or just found a ray of hope at a lonely moment choosing to believe that something unseen is caring for you can be a life-shifting exercise.

The greatest joys are found not only in what we do and feel but also in what we hope for.

Hope founded upon a human being a man-made philosophy or any institution is always misplaced... because these things are unreliable and fleeting.

Isn't it the moment of most profound doubt that gives birth to new certainties? Perhaps hopelessness is the very soil that nourishes human hope perhaps one could never find sense in life without first experiencing its absurdity.

But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful.

I'd rather rot on my own floor than be found by a bunch of bingo players in a nursing home.

But inspiration? - That's when you come home from abroad and are asked: Well have you found inspiration? - and fortunately you haven't. But the impressions sink in of course and may emerge later: None of us has invented the house that was done many thousands of years ago.

Every woman I've had a relationship with has found this maddening the fact that I will talk about anything on the stage and reveal all this stuff and yet when I'm at home I clam up and won't discuss anything intimate or personal.

I can't grill vegetables shellfish or steaks without tongs. Don't bother with those long-handled grilling tongs normally found in the BBQ section of your home store. Get intimate with your grill and opt for the regular stainless steel tongs.

The aesthetic came along the way I think - just through experimenting and going on tour and trying stuff out on stage having fun with it and not taking it too seriously. If I had a ballgown at home I'd wear it onstage. If I found something in a charity shop I'd wear it. That's where it grew from - just wanting to play dress-up.

The best thing that ever happened to me is that nothing happened in writing. I ended up working for engineering companies and that's where I found my material in the everyday struggle between capitalism and grace. Being broke and tired you don't come home your best self.
