Widespread state control over art and culture has left no room for freedom of expression in the country. For more than 60 years anyone with a dissenting opinion has been suppressed. Chinese art is merely a product: it avoids any meaningful engagement. There is no larger context. Its only purpose is to charm viewers with its ambiguity.

Whatever the immediate gains and losses the dangers to our safety arising from political suppression are always greater than the dangers to the safety resulting from political freedom. Suppression is always foolish. Freedom is always wise.

A state that suppresses all freedom of speech and which by imposing the most terrible punishments treats each and every attempt at criticism however morally justified and every suggestion for improvement as plotting to high treason is a state that breaks an unwritten law.

Since Castro took power the Cuban people have been denied basic human freedoms. No freedom of religion no freedom of the press no political freedom. And the regime uses brutality and violence to suppress these freedoms and impose its will.

A peace that depends on fear is nothing but a suppressed war.

I think that all the anger and cynicism comes from suppressing things that we always wanted.

When you start suppressing feelings at an early age it hurts you down the road. Full expression of anger and pain is very important.

A moment comes which comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new when an age ends and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.
