As human beings we are vulnerable to confusing the unprecedented with the improbable. In our everyday experience if something has never happened before we are generally safe in assuming it is not going to happen in the future but the exceptions can kill you and climate change is one of those exceptions.

I remember things that happened sixty years ago but if you ask me where I left my car keys five minutes ago that's sometimes a problem.

'Blind Curve ' the book I'm working on now sprang from a crazy incident that happened to me last year while on my book tour. I was pulled out of my car for a minor traffic violation - an incident that escalated into my being thrown into cuffs and told I was going to jail. Except in my story the hero doesn't get off as easily as I did.

Can you imagine a guy breaking into your car and he steals your guitar case 'cause he thinks it's a guitar and he gets it home and opens it up and there's a rake inside it an electric toilet plunger and a dog skull? That actually happened.

So I remember when I was a kid I was waiting for my mom to come home when she was working late and you know I was like 'Oh my God what happened to her? Is she OK? Did something happen to her getting in the car?' I was a little kid. But those are actually early onsets of anxiety.

The biggest thrill a ballplayer can have is when your son takes after you. That happened when my Bobby was in his championship Little League game. He really showed me something. Struck out three times. Made an error that lost the game. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we drove off. Gosh I was proud.

It all happened so fast. The ghetto. The deportation. The sealed cattle car. The fiery altar upon which the history of our people and the future of mankind were meant to be sacrificed.

The business side of film has goofed up so many things but even that's changing. It happened to the music industry and now it's happening to the film studios. It's crazy what's going on. But artists should have control of their work especially if as I always say you never turn down a good idea and never take a bad idea.

I happened to come along in the music business when there was no trend.

Being a mother is the best thing that ever happened to me. Before you have your first baby you are a girl and then you become a mother. There is no transition into being a woman you literally become a mum and being a mum means you always love someone else more than yourself and it is an unexplainable situation.

The future hasn't happened yet and the past is gone. So I think the only moment we have is right here and now and I try to make the best of those moments the moments that I'm in.

Your purpose is to make your audience see what you saw hear what you heard feel what you felt. Relevant detail couched in concrete colorful language is the best way to recreate the incident as it happened and to picture it for the audience.

I didn't see it then but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

And the girls now can no longer be on covers and be in the ads because your actresses have taken over all the jobs. I don't know what happened but we want our jobs back.
