When we were filming 'The Darkest Hour ' we didn't even know what the aliens were going to look like we didn't even have a graphic reference. So it was definitely a big challenge to sell those kind of extreme moments when you're just generating them from your own imagination.

Today mythical thinking has fallen into disrepute we often dismiss it as irrational and self-indulgent. But the imagination is also the faculty that has enabled scientists to bring new knowledge to light and to invent technology that has made us immeasurably more effective.

I regard the writing of humor as a supreme artistic challenge.

The contrasts between what is spent today to educate a child in the poorest New York City neighborhoods where teacher salaries are often even lower than the city averages and spending levels in the wealthiest suburban areas are daunting challenges to any hope New Yorkers might retain that even semblances of fairness still prevail.

One of the biggest challenges in my job is letting go of the movie once you go home at night and knowing you can't do anything to your performance once you've laid it on film.
